48-Year-Old Russian Has World Record BASE Jump Off Mount Everest

MOSCOW, Russia (CBS Sacramento) – A 48-year-old Russian extreme-sport ace flew off the face of Mount Everest, jumping from more than 23,600 feet above sea level – the highest base jump ever.

Valery Rozov's BASE jump from more than 23,687 above sea level came 60 years to the date that Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay climbed Mount Everest. The May 5 jump came more than two years in the making. Rozov, a member of the Red Bull team, sponsored by the Santa Monica-based company, was accompanied by four sherpas and a camera crew.

After climbing the mountain for four days, Rozov arrived at the base camp for the jumping location. At around 2:30 p.m., Rozov jumped off with temperatures hovering around 0 degrees.

"Only when I got back home did I see how hard it was for me both physically and psychologically," said Rozo in a news release. "When you look at the videos you realize that it took a lot longer than usual to get from falling to flying."
