Opening Of New Bay Bridge Span Delayed Until At Least December

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The eastern San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will not open as scheduled on Labor Day as a contractor repairs cracked seismic safety bolts.

The Toll Bridge Program Oversight Committee said Monday that the contractor working on the project forecasts that its retrofit of the failed bolts will take until at least Dec. 10.

The authority says a bridge opening date will be determined after that.

Lawmakers on Monday were receiving a briefing on the investigation into why 32 seismic safety bolts cracked after they were tightened in March.
