Rim Fire Near Yosemite National Park Grows To 15 Square Miles

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (CBS/AP) — A wildfire on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park has grown to more than 15 square miles and has forced the shutdown of one access road into the west side of the park.

The U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday that approximately 2,500 structures were threatened north of Highway 120.

The blaze, which started Saturday, had already destroyed two residences and five outbuildings and forced the evacuation of the community of Buck Meadows.

An evacuation shelter has been set up at Sonora Fairgrounds in the Manzanita Building on 220 Southgate Drive in Sonora.

State Route 120 was shut down in both directions, blocking traffic in and out of the park.

The park remains open and visitors can use State Route 140 and State Route 4.

Fire crews have not achieved any containment of the blaze, which is burning in remote, steep terrain.

The cause is under investigation.
