Sacramento Police Suspect Elderly Woman Was Attacked For Prescription Drugs

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — An elderly woman was attacked in what Sacramento Police are calling an attempted prescription drug theft.

The attack happened in broad daylight on Aug. 30, and it has people on edge.

The elderly woman in her 70s was walking down 24th Street with a bag in her hand. She had just left a nearby Walgreens when police say four men jumped out of a black car and assaulted her.

"One factor that detectives are looking at is was this an attempted robbery for pharmaceuticals," said Sacramento Police officer Doug Morse.

The victim didn't have any medication on her, and the suspects got back in the car and took off.

"We do know that prescription drugs sometimes on the street are sold and bought on the street, so we are just looking at this as a possible motive."

People who live in the area say she was probably targeted for one reason.

"Defenseless. Four strong, able bodies. Uncalled for."

The woman was released from the hospital with only minor injuries, that's the good news.

They're hopeful that someone saw something and will come forward with the tip they need to track down the bad guys.

Investigators say several of the suspects are in their 20s and one is in his 40s. Police aslso tell us the men were wearing red shirts and red shorts.
