Arrest Made In Killing Of Rancho Cordova Senior

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a Rancho Cordova man inside of his home.

Just after midnight on Monday, homicide detectives arrested Shauna Burton, 36, of Sacramento, for the murder of a 78-year-old man found dead inside his home on Routier Road on Sunday, according to a statement from the Rancho Cordova Police Department.

The man's wife, also 78 years old, had been assaulted.

Investigators have not released the identity of the man, pending notification of next of kin.

The motive for the killing is under investigation.

Police say a neighbor found the man dead in the entryway of the couple's mobile home on Sunday after hearing a gunshot. The front door of the home had been propped open.

"We heard sirens and police started rolling in, and we knew something was horribly bad," said neighbor Yavonne Folks. "There's so many of us that have lived here for years and years. When something like this happens, it's just close to home."

The woman, who suffers from Alzheimer's, was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is still in critical condition.

Folks says the man was a dedicated caretaker of his wife and says the two had lived in the home for more than 40 years.

Detectives urge anyone who may know details that could further the investigation to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (916) 874-5115. Tip information may also be left anonymously at www.sacsheriff.com by entering the keyword 'SSD', or by calling (916) 874-TIPS (8477).
