UPDATED: Husband Says Mother Was Off Medication When She Stabbed Son

FAIRFIELD (CBS13) - A Fairfield woman is accused of attacking her husband, and then turning the knife on her little boy, who stepped in to protect his father.

Police say it started as a domestic disturbance between the boy's parents in the 1000 block of Scott Street.

Dirk Couveson, 8, is in the hospital with critical injuries while his mother, 38-year-old Lythia Lynette Bouie, is behind bars.

Bouie's husband, Danny Couveson, says she was drinking Friday and had not taken her prescribed medication when she got upset and started attacking him.

"She was falling forward and she was just swinging the knife," said Danny.

Danny says he watched as his wife stabbed their son while she was trying to attack him.

"I feel terrible about what happened. In a way, I wish it would have happened to me than him," he said.

Neighbors say they saw the Dirk outside after the alleged attack. They say he fell to the ground, seemingly unconscious.

Danny showed CBS13 cameras where he also was stabbed, but his son's wounds are much worse. Dirk was stabbed in the stomach.

"She's probably feeling a little bit of remorse now that she's not intoxicated now and she's realized what she's done," said Danny.

He says Bouie is bipolar and schizophrenic, and had not taken her medication at the time of the attack.

"When she's not on her meds and drinking, it's not a good thing for her and she snaps. And, we tell her she needs to get help and she refuses to get the help," said Danny.

"It's sad to say because this goes on all the time, and all of us are sick of it," said neighbor Debra Livingston.

Neighbors here are concerned something wasn't done sooner to prevent the little boy from getting hurt.

"We were hoping somebody would do something about it. So, this wouldn't happen no more and look what happened, a little boy got hurt," Livingston said.

"I'm upset but I'm more saddened that it happened, because it didn't need to escalate to that," said Danny.

Dirk is recovering at an area hospital with a punctured lung, but he is expected to survive.

The couple's two other children are now in state custody.

Bouie was arrested and booked at Solano County Jail for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of felony domestic violence, and one count of felony child endangerment.

Editor's Note: There is a discrepancy regarding the boy's age. While authorities reported the boy's age as 8 years old, the father says the boy is 10 years old. The story's script reflects what authorities are currently reporting.
