Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Details Announced

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Governor Jerry Brown's office announced details in this year's capitol Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The 82nd annual event will be held on December 12 at 4:30 p.m. on the West Steps of the State Capitol, according to the press release.

The tree is a 55-foot douglas fir taken from near Redding -- the second Christmas tree to come from that spot. It will be decorated with 500 hand-made decorations provided by children and adults from the state's development centers and 21 nonprofit regional centers. It will be lit up with 10,000 ultra-low wattage LED lights.

Performers taking part in the ceremony include California Army National Guard's DET 1, 40th Infantry Division Band, Brass Quintet, the Governor's Own; California Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera; students from the Oakland Military Institute and Oakland School for the Arts; and St. Paul's Baptist Church Choir.

The ceremony is free, but attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item and RSVP here. Donations benefit California Emergency Foodlink.
