Local Cub Scouts Thanking Soldiers Overseas With Candy Project

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A local group of kids decided to give back to the troops. They're giving away all of their Halloween candy in hopes of helping the lives of soldiers overseas.

Nicholas Kraemer is in fourth grade and wrote this letter to a soldier:

"What is your favorite candy? I hope you like the candy I sent," said Nicholas.

His Cub Scout troop was looking for a service project around Veterans Day and their abundance of candy seemed like a no-brainer.

"When Halloween came around we thought this was a good idea for the boys to learn how to give away something they may want to other people," said Brian Kraemer, Nicholas' dad and troop leader.

So that's exactly what they did. They sorted the candy by chocolate and fruity and individually packaged it to send to as many soldiers as possible.

"We talked a little bit about the sacrifices they have to make – that they don't' necessarily get candy over there, they don't get the hamburgers we eat over here -- those types of things," said Brian.

"I bet you're awesome at what you do," read another Cub Scout.

Sharon Havers comes from a military family and is excited to send a little slice of home overseas.

"Who doesn't love a letter from somebody who admires you, even if you don't know them," said Havers.

The letters and candy will go out this week, stamped with a smile and high hopes for something in return.

"They're hoping to get letters back," said Brian.

What started out as a service project for this group has turned into a heartwarming tribute to the people who protect our country.

"It makes me tear up. It makes me so proud of the youth that are coming up in this world and the selflessness. Kids love candy; kids love things; but we're raising kids that are willing to give and I love, love that," said Havers.

You can donate candy for the troops as well. Just take it to Kovar's Satori Academy of Martial Arts on Franklin Boulevard in Elk Grove.
