Crying Newborn Found In Flowerbed At Galt Residence

GALT (CBS13) - A newborn baby who was found in a Galt flowerbed and suffering from hypothermia is improving at the hospital.

On Tuesday at 5:22 a.m., police were called out to the 500 block of B Street in Galt to investigate reports of a baby found in a flower bed in front of a residence. When police arrived, they found medical personnel were already attending to the baby girl, preparing to take her to the hospital, according to Galt Police Dept. Lt. Brian Kalinowski.

Police met Dwanda Mahoney, 30, a transient, on the front porch of the residence. When questioned about the baby, she denied having it and even denied being pregnant. Police thought she may have been the mother and had her taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The baby is recovering at the hospital and is in fair condition. She will eventually be discharged into the care of CPS.

Mahoney was determined to be the mother. She spent the night in the hospital; and when she was released, was arrested on child endangerment and attempted murder charges.

The case has been referred to the Sacramento County DA's office.
