Winters Slaying Fugitive Appears Before Vegas Judge

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A fugitive in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend in Northern California told a Las Vegas judge he fears for his safety, but won't contest his transfer in custody to face murder and probation violation charges.

William Carl Gardner III told Justice of the Peace Joe M. Bonaventure that unspecified people threatened to kill him in California.

The judge responded that Gardner needed to lodge his concerns with jailers.

The 30-year-old Gardner surrendered to police and U.S. marshals early Tuesday after an hours-long standoff at a Las Vegas apartment.

He had been sought in the Nov. 18 shooting death of 32-year-old Leslie Pinkston in a vehicle in downtown Winters, Calif.

Pinkston was the mother of a 6-year-old girl. Police said she obtained a protection order against Gardner after previous confrontations.
