California Attorney General Kamala Harris Announcing Re-Election Bid

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Attorney General Kamala Harris is formally announcing her bid for a second term as California's top law enforcement officer.

Her campaign says she will take out papers to run again on Wednesday at the San Francisco Department of Elections.

A Democrat, Harris is the first woman to be elected attorney general and so far faces no opposition. She narrowly won the office in 2010 after serving two terms as San Francisco district attorney.

During her current term, Harris won additional concessions from the nation's top five banks as part of a national mortgage settlement. She also helped negotiate a related settlement requiring JPMorgan Chase & Co. to pay $299 million to California's public employee and teacher pension funds.

California was one of the states hardest hit by the mortgage meltdown.
