Sacramento Labor Picnic Divided After Removal Of Longtime Labor Leader Bill Camp
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento's labor picnic was set to celebrate people standing together, but this year's Labor Day had union members divided after the removal of a longtime labor leader.
Supporters of the colorful labor leader Bill Camp handed out flyers and printed an "I Miss Bill" T-shirt.
Camp was put on paid leave by his Sacramento Central Labor Council Board. President Lino Pedres denies the move had anything to do with politics or Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's strong-mayor campaign.
But Camp's supporters say he was placed on leave after speaking out against Johnson's bid to increase the power of the mayor's office, even as he gave a eulogy at Sacramento civic great Grantland Johnson's funeral.
Grantland Johnson's widow says she's written a letter of support for Camp.
Kevin Johnson is not commenting.
