Sacramento Named A Top City For Coffee Snobs, And That Might Not Be A Bad Thing
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Is Sacramento snobby when it comes to coffee?
The city is nationally ranked as one of the Top 10 cities for coffee snobs, but that may not be a bad thing.
But what is a coffee snob?
"If you are a connoisseur of the coffee house, a coffee snob pretty much only drinks black coffee and espresso," said Temple Coffee Roasters owner Sean Kohmescher.
Whatever the definition, Sacramento has been ranked a Top 10 city for coffee snobs by FourSquare and the real estate site Redfin.
What makes Sacramento such a hot spot for coffee snobs is its concentration of independent shops per capita. It's no surprise that Seattle tops the list. Three California cities made the Top 10, with San Francisco coming in at No. 4 and San Diego at No. 6. Sacramento came in at 10.
"I don't know if i'd use the word 'snob' but definitely people are loving better coffee, specialty coffee," said Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters owner Edie Baker.
She says life's too short to drink bad coffee, and she's happy to see more independent shops brewing in the capital city.
"It's not just shops that are out there to make a buck, it's people that are passionate about coffee," she said.
If you're into coffee, but not up to snob status yet, get your mug ready. Chocolate Fish and Temple have organized the first Specialty Coffee Week beginning Oct. 13.
"It's going to be a lot of educational events. We're doing a dinner. We're bringing a producer up from Guatemala," Baker said.
"It's really important for all of Sacramento to come out and support all of the different businesses that are going to be having great events," Kohmescher said.
