Vigil Held For Stockton Teen Killed In Car Crash

STOCKTON (CBS13) - A vigil was held tonight to remember a teenager killed in a high-speed car crash in Stockton. We now know he should have never been behind the wheel in the first place.

There was a lot of crying and consoling on N. Wilson way in Stockton.

"Everything is still fresh," said Kevin, a family member.

Family and friends gathered to light candles and mourn at the scene where 15-year-old Dylan Chandler lost his life.

"We were all blessed to know him…excellent young kid. Kids make mistakes," said Kevin.

CHP patrol officers say the mistake Dylan made was driving without a license. They say he took his mom's car without her permission and packed five other passengers inside. Dylan was allegedly speeding when he lost control of the car and crashed into a speed limit sign and tree.

"This is very tough for us," said Tino Thurman, Dylan's cousin.

Thurman says it has been especially tough for Dylan's mother, whose birthday is today.

"Today was his mom's birthday and he passed away on his mom's birthday. She's going through it now," said Thurman.

Video shot by a witness shows the scene this morning. A helicopter took one of the injured passengers to UC Davis Medical Center. CHP officers say three teens in the car were hurt, but two others walked away from the crash.

Another witness says he heard the revving of the engine.

"Next thing you know you hear tires screeching. You hear a loud impact -- boom!" said Paul Salinas, who says he witnessed the crash.

Dylan's girlfriend was in the car when it crashed and was able to walk away from the crash. She attended tonight's vigil. Family members are hoping Dylan's mistake will be a lesson for other teens.

"It's just tragic for the family," said Kevin.
