Veggie Trike Puts Farm-To-Fork Movement On Three Wheels In West Sacramento

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The farm-to-fork movement has hit the streets on three wheels in the form of the Veggie Trike in West Sacramento.

The mobile farmers market might not come to your neighborhood yet, but the goal is to get one there.

Collin Samaan hops aboard the custom bike he's named Veggie Trike. He pedals four days a week on the streets of West Sacramento, with music playing like an ice cream truck.

He and his wife, Aimee Benner, stock the trike with all sorts of locally sourced food to sell, from fruits and vegetables, to honey, even Apple Hill pies.

"So people who can't that can't come to the farmers markets, we go to them," Benner said.

She says the response has been outstanding so far.

"People will just call out," she said. "They'll actually drive their car, pull a U-turn to come stop the cart."

Once a week, the couple parks the trike at Edible Pedal in Midtown and customers come to them.

If all goes well, Samaan hopes to expand the business.

"We would like to have a Downtown Sacramento Beggie Trike, a Land Park Veggie Trike," he said.

But before that, he says he'd like to start a morning route, selling locally roasted coffee downtown.

"Where there are big congregations of people," he said. So the state workers, we'd love to really help them out—early-morning risers."

Benner says the best part about their new venture is seeing children interested in healthy eating.

"It's now fun because kids are getting excited because they come out of the house, they get their piggy banks, and they come use their money to come buy healthy things," she said.
