Woman Found Dead In Calistoga Road Was Victim Of Homicide

CALISTOGA, Calif. (AP) -- Sheriff's officials say a woman who was found lying in a lane of a rural Northern California highway may have been the victim of a homicide.

Napa County Sheriff's Capt. Doug Pike says initial reports just before 5 a.m. Sunday indicated the woman had likely been struck by a hit-and-run driver on Highway 29 near Calistoga. But Pike tells the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa (http://bit.ly/1yMLL0Y ) investigators found no signs of a crash at the scene.

The woman, who was in her 50s, suffered major head injuries and died on the way to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Her name has not been released.

Pike says investigators are trying to determine what happened and how long she was on the road.
