"When I am working with individuals, I use coaching to help them get there. When I am working with small to medium-sized businesses, I use my expertise in human resources to help them get to their idea of ideal," said Smith.

What inspired you to enter this field?

"I'd have to say that my inspiration comes from the people who come to me with a desire to do better. They may not be clear as to how to get to their vision, but they can see themselves doing better and they know there is a way to get there."

"My happiest success story would have to be when I coached a young, single mother whose unemployment benefits were close to ending. She was able to get interviews, but not pass the interview in order to get a job offer. Her challenge was to quickly build rapport, a key skill to demonstrate during any interview. After coaching, she was able to apply the techniques we discussed and get the job."

What education did you receive that afforded you this career path?

"I obtained my Bachelor's of Science from Kent State University, and then earned my Professional in Human Resources certificate (PHR), from the HR Certification Institute. I owe my test preparation to the PHR/SPHR Study Prep offered at the UC Davis Extension Coaching for Life and Work program in earning an Accredited Certified Coach (ACC)"

How has your education benefited you in your career?

"My education helped me discern what 'right' looks like. The advice I give must not be based upon my desire to be 'right', it has to be based on doing the right thing. And sometimes that means voicing an opinion that isn't popular; but because of my education, knowing it's the right thing to do."
