Davis Teen Gets 52 Years To Life In Brutal Slaying Of Elderly Couple In Their Beds

DAVIS (CBS13) — A Davis teenager will spend more than 50 years and likely the rest of his life for the brutal slaying of an elderly couple as they slept in their home.

Daniel Marsh was found guilty in September of stabbing Claudia Maupin and Oliver "Chip" Northup to death and mutilating them in April 2013. A judge sentenced Marsh to 52 years to life behind bars.

Michael Cabral from the Yolo County District Attorney's Office says justice was served.

"I've never seen a defendant with such an evil soul as this defendant in 28 years as a prosecutor," he said.

Marsh sat quietly in court today as Maupin's daughter Victoria Hurd and other family members took time speaking about their loved ones.

"All of this has been about the defendant and it was a privilege to speak for both of them and let everyone know how wonderful they were," he said.

The family spoke of happier times with their parents and grandparents. They showed pictures of the family together and played a video of a birthday party for Claudia.

The tributes did cause Marsh to tear up for a moment, but the family says that's not enough, and they hope he will stay behind bars for as long as possible.

"I don't believe that he is rehabilitated. He has not shown any sign of remorse, neither has his family tried to show any concern for our family," said James Northup.

Marsh will be held in the juvenile detention facility until he is 18, when he will be moved to the California Department of Corrections. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

During the trial, a paramedic testified that the organs of the elderly couple had been removed.

According to other testimony, Claudia begged him to stop as she died. Prosecutors say Marsh confessed to then mutilating their bodies.

Investigators also testified Marsh confessed that, before the murders, he wandered the street looking for any victim. Marsh said that he had gone to between 40 and 50 homes looking for unlocked doors or windows when he an open window at the couple's home. He said he watched the couple as they slept before he attacked.

Marsh's attorney has never denied his client murdered the couple, instead blaming the teen's actions on his parents' divorce and antidepressants.
