8:15 p.m. UPDATE: The woman who was shot has died from her injuries, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

The woman's identity has not been released, pending identification from the coroner.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — A woman was shot and critically injured by celebratory New Year's Eve gunfire from her boyfriend, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said on Thursday.

Deputies say the woman was injured in an apartment complex parking lot on Callie Lane just past midnight on Thursday by a bullet fired by her boyfriend, Steven Michael Lucas, 24.

The woman, who has not been identified, is in her early 20s and sustained a critical, life threatening injury, according to investigators.

Lucas was booked on negligent discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury.

The incident was one of many cases in the region of reported gunfire to ring in 2015.
