Bonney Field Expansion Project Begins

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Expansion work has begun on Bonney Field at Cal Expo.

Sacramento Republic FC had a great first year. It won  the league championships and sold out each game.

To accommodate more fans, the team will add 4,500 more seats to the Bonney Field, bringing the total up to around 11,000.

The majority of the expansion will take place on the north and west sides. Work will also be done on the field to prevent water from running into the parking lot.

"One of the biggest things our fans told us they wanted more of was seats. When we built Bonney Field at 8,000 seats, we looked at comparisons across the league, we looked at league average attendance, and we looked at what we thought the market could handle. And obviously we were wrong because we thought we would average 5,000-6,000 per game and we sold out every game at 8,000 -- not including Hughes. So one of the biggest things we put focus on was the investment for additional seating " said Sacramento Republic FC spokesperson Erika Bjork.

Work on the stadium is expected to wrap up in time for the season opener.
