Jerry Brown Spent Less Than Neel Kashkari On Campaign For California Governor
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Newly filed reports show that Gov. Jerry Brown spent less than his opponent to get re-elected while also passing two ballot measures.
Final campaign totals reported Friday show Republican candidate Neel Kashkari spent $7.1 million compared to $5.9 million for the Democratic governor.
Brown, who won a historic term last November, spent most of his time and money boosting two measures on the November ballot: a water bond and a new rainy day fund.
Kashkari's spent more than $2 million of his personal funds.
Brown ended the year with nearly $24 million in two accounts he controls. That money can go toward a ballot measure if he chooses.
In 2010, Brown spent $36.5 million to return to the governor's office while former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman spent $178.5 million.
