Anonymous Donors Help Dixon Woman Replace Scooter Stolen Before Christmas

DIXON (CBS13) — The electric scooter Phyllis Meek relies on for everything was taken from her garage in December. After our story aired on Christmas day, donations poured in.

On Thursday, she got a special delivery thanks to the kindness of strangers.

There were squeals of joy as Meek took a ride for the very first time on her brand new scooter.

"This is a victorious day you know?" she said.

Meek was born with cerebral palsy and has a hard time getting around. Her scooter gave her mobility, until thieves stole it from her garage.

"She would use that scooter to get around everywhere and not only that but connect with the kids, take them around the neighborhood, it was around Christmas," said her daughter-in-law Loraine Meek.

After our story aired, donations started pouring in from as far away as Texas. people stepped up to help a woman in need, but it wasn't enough to help buy a new ride.

Then, an anonymous couple donated the rest of the money Phyllis needed.

"So we waited and waited, and they came and they gave me a check for $1,500," she said.

That allowed for a very special delivery on Thursday—a candy red scooter, just like the one Phyllis used to have, but with a few more bells and whistles, like hazards, blinkers and it even goes faster than her previous scooter.

"I just can't thank everybody enough—I mean it," she said.

Allowing her to do all the things she loves again, like chasing turkeys, taking her grandchildren for a ride, or just enjoying her neighborhood.

"It's not just mobility, it's freedom," she said.

She will make sure to lock up her new scooter and even plans on installing an alarm on it.
