Low Snow Means Disappointing Presidents Day Weekend Ahead For Lower Elevation Ski Resorts

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Presidents Day weekend is a big opportunity for ski resorts, but warmer temperatures and lack of good snowfall have forced many resorts at lower elevations to shut down this year.

The impact is being felt hard by family-owned resorts that rely on natural snow.

The Donner Ski Ranch is melting away ahead of what is supposed to be one of the busiest weekends of the season, making way for some disappointed skiers.

Bryce Nesbit brought his son back to the mountain he grew up on. Only back in the day, it snowed a lot.

Nowadays the lifts are empty, because of exactly the opposite.

The owner of the ski ranch was hoping the latest storm would save them from the drought. Instead it kept them closed. They were closed most of January too.

About 20 percent of their staff is on the schedule to work the weekend.
