Woman Hit, Killed By Freight Train Was Talking On Her Phone

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a woman who was fatally struck by a freight train north of Santa Barbara was talking on her cellphone when she walked into the path of the train.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said the Union Pacific train's horn sounded several times before Saturday's collision near a train station in Goleta.

The victim was identified as 49-year-old Suzanne Worsham. Hoover said the woman had visited a friend at a homeless encampment before walking on the tracks.

Hoover said coroner's investigators will conduct toxicology tests before determining a cause of death, but that Worsham's death appears accidental.
