22 Years Before Koons Piece, Another Downtown Plaza Art Installation Drew Attention

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It was at the time, the signature piece of artwork leading into Sacramento's Downtown Plaza.

The year was 1993, and the plaza was getting a serious makeover with a second story addition. There was something else keeping watch over the renovation—the Clock Tower.

The piece of artwork was unveiled the same year as "a mixed-media replica of high-voltage tower adorned with floating planets, a clock and other futuristic elements."

The tower cost about $500,000 when it first went up in 1993. Nowadays, the clock doesn't work, but it still stands in its current location where most people CBS13 spoke to had no idea what it was.
