Friends, Teammates Mourn El Camino High Teen Killed In Capital City Freeway Crash

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Friends and teammates remembered a teenage girl killed in a chain-reaction crash on the Capital City Freeway over the weekend.

Haylie Jordan, 15, died on Sunday when a pickup truck rear ended the car she was riding in, pushing the car into a big rig. Her parents were also injured, but survived.

Jordan was a freshman at El Camino High School where she was a member of the dance team. Grief counselors were on hand Monday to help students, staff and her teammates cope with the unexpected loss.

Dance team coach Kara Ricks says Jordan's death is still a shock to everyone who knew her.

"Today's a tough day for the entire community and the Eagle family has been deeply affected by the loss of Haylie," she said.

Ricks says she was an inspiring and motivating member of the high-school dance team, even though it was just her first year.

"She knew who she was at a very young age, and that put a lot of people at ease because she was so comfortable with herself it allowed everybody else to feel the same way," she said.

Ricks says Haylie joined the dance team as a freshman and leaders had already chosen her to be on two of their three competition squads.

"Haylie's last dance performance was in the hip-hop division at state championships, and she filled in for a junior who was unable to perform that day and she absolutely rocked it," she said.

A young girl with a bright future taken way too soon.

"I know that she will be dancing up there in heaven, and we are just really grateful to have had her," she said.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Tuesday night at El Camino Baptist Church.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating possible distracted driving in the crash, but no arrests have been made.
