California Bill That Would Remove Childhood Vaccine Exemptions Advances

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A controversial bill that would eliminate the personal belief exemption for childhood vaccinations cleared the California Senate Education Committee on Wednesday.

Senate Bill 277 passed on a 7-2 vote in the same committee where it stalled in last week. Amendments were made to solidify the rules apply to children in traditional schools.

"This is totally taking away a right of mine to choose how I want to get medical care for them," said Tianna Hazard.

Opponents are again packing in, but this time without a public comment, expressing their outrage after.

"I think that that is a discussion that is left between the parent and the doctor, and that is a decision that does not belong in government," said Lisa Bakshi.

After hearing concerns last Wednesday, Sens. Richard Pan and Ben Allen amended the bill, now making it clear home schools designated as private schools and students working an independent study curriculum are exempt.

"We think we've struck a fair balance here that provides more options to parents who are concerned about not vaccinating their children," Allen said.

Pan thanked the committee for its support while opponents promise to continue their battle.

"It's not fair politics," Bakshi said. "We will continue to fight, and we know what was done behind the scene to stack this bill in Sen. Pan's favor."

The bill now heads to the judiciary committee.
