Sacramento LGBT Community Raising Funds For Rainbow Crosswalk In Midtown

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The streets in the heart of Sacramento's Midtown Lavender Heights neighborhood could be changing as there's a big push to add rainbow crosswalks to the historically LGBT neighborhood.

Community members are trying to raise more than $30,000, and they know they've got a lot of work to do.

It seems like a lot of money to spend when there's nothing wrong with the current crosswalks, but members of Sacramento's LGBT community who are pushing for more pizzazz say it would make a bold statement.

"It's good to be out and visible and have this public symbol of our community, the history of what we've lived through, the struggles that we've won," said Bonnie Osborn with the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce.

The group launched a fundraising project to pay for the colorful crosswalks that would be modeled after the ones in other cities such as San Francisco's Castro District. So far the group has raised about 10 percent of the costs in just over a month.

But why would this project cost $35,000? It's more than just a paint job.

"It's actually inlaid into the asphalt, so we're actually going to do some street construction," Osborn said.

The idea has already been endorsed by the Midtown Business Association, who would managed the construction of the project in partnership with the community.

The goal is to raise the money by June.
