Discovery Park Fire Flares Back Up; Suspect Accused Of Starting Fire In Custody

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A grass fire that was allegedly set by an arsonist in Discovery Park on Monday flared back up today. Fortunately firefighters were able to contain the flames.

One man is under arrest, accused of starting the fire that closed northbound Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento on Monday night.

Smoke from the fire was so dense drivers could barely see the road ahead. A Sacramento Fire spokesperson says a suspect has been arrested. Forty-six-year-old David Cove faces arson and drug charges.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. near the Richards Boulevard off-ramp.

Earlier on Monday, CBS13 received video from a viewer showing the man walking along the freeway.

Firefighters say they were worried the blaze would spread to nearby buildings.

"Normally this would not be a concern for us, but due to the ongoing exceptional drought and the wind conditions, we were concerned for the Motel 6 located on Jiboom Street, and also heavy smoke that was going across I-5," said Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson Roberto Padilla.

Cove is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
