High School Basketball Player In Roseville Selected To Play On Team USA

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - A freshman high school basketball star from Roseville is now on team USA.

Jordan Brown found out this week he's made the roster after an intense nationwide tryout. Brown is now at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

He's homegrown talent here, refining his skills on this Woodcreek High School basketball court -- home of the Timberwolves. Now he'll be showing his talent to the world.

"It's about as high as it gets," said Paul Hayes, Brown's coach.

Just ask his high school coach. Brown is a 15-year-old basketball phenom who's made an incredible cut.

"I think it was like 33; and they cut it down to 17; and they cut it down to 12, so you're talking about 12 players in the entire country," said Hayes.

Brown is one of a dozen 16-and-under teens to make the U.S. national team. It's a point of pride for the entire campus.

"And it's exciting to have a player like Jordan's skill level here because, yeah, we are a public school. And so we get who comes through the door," said Hayes.

In this era of coaching, Coach Hayes can now watch Brown's highlight reel from his kitchen table whenever he wants. He knew he had a special player as soon as Brown walked onto campus and into the gym. A 6-foot-9 inch freshman, Brown's dad played pro basketball. But Hayes says his star's strength comes from his character.

"He does not take anything for granted. Every drill, every scrimmage, he gives 110 percent," said Hayes.

At 15-years-old, Brown will now have the incredible opportunity to play overseas, teammates with the best of the best representing the U.S. and Roseville's Woodcreek High.

"Basketball has always been a source of pride at Woodcreek," said Hayes.

Hayes says Brown isn't only great in the paint. He shoots 80 percent from the free-throw, making him a sure shot for success.

Brown heads to Argentina next week for a championship tournament between teams from North and South American countries.
