Google App Counts Calories From Your Food Photos

SACRAMENTO (CBS Sacramento) - Not sure how many calories are in that plate of spaghetti? Wondering whether to order that extra basket of fries? There's an app for that.

Now the minds at Google have developed an app that can guess your caloric intake, just by analyzing the photos of food that people post to Instagram.

The app, called Im2Calories, was unveiled at a tech conference in Boston. It uses algorithms to analyze food images and estimate the number of calories in your meal, reports Popular Science.

The technology comes from DeepMind, a company Google bought last year for $400 million.

While being able to add up calories consumed in a day may be very helpful for those watching their waist, multiple studies have shown that counting calories alone may not be the best way to lose weight.
