Rafting Gone Wild Crowd Not As Wild As In Previous Years

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) - As Rafting Gone Wild winds down on the American River, county rangers say they are happy to announce this year's event wasn't as wild as expected.

Authorities took the event seriously, imposing a ban on alcohol on the river. They've been on the river since 9 a.m., asking to look into coolers of people on the rafts and confiscating the alcohol.

"We have a lot of families and the last thing we want is conflict between heavily intoxicated rafters who are just here to basically drink on the river, and other people who are here to enjoy it for exercise, practice for a race or families," said Sacramento County Chief Ranger Michael Doane.

So far, rangers have pulled people out of the water, not for being intoxicated, but dehydrated. It's a big change from a couple of years ago when the event turned violent, which prompted this year's ban.

Rangers are happy to say it's been a very tame event. As of 5 p.m., rangers had issued about 15 citations. They arrested two people for allegedly stealing a golf cart.
