Driver: Setting Sun Hindered Vision Before Fatal Manteca Crash

MANTECA (CBS13) – Police in Manteca are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a man and left a child with life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened Thursday just after 7 p.m. Manteca Police say a man was pushing a child in a stroller in the crosswalk of E. Woodward and Wellington Avenues when both were hit by an SUV.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver, identified as 44-year-old Manteca resident Dennis Gase, stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. He was not under the influence of alcohol at the time and he willingly turned over his cell phone to forensic investigators, police say.

The child has been taken to an area children's hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Gase told police that the setting sun interfered with his vision at the time of the accident.  Investigators are still looking into the incident.
