SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento City College was paced on lockdown Thursday after an on-campus shooting left one person dead and two people injured.
The shooting was reported to police just before 4 p.m., and happened in a parking lot bordering the south edge of campus along Sutterville Road, just west of the softball field.
The victim who was killed and one of the injured victims are Sacramento City College students, according to Los Rios Police Community College District spokesperson Mitchel Benson. The injured student was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with a gunshot to the abdomen. The remaining victim suffered injuries that did not require hospitalization.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
Police now say there is only one gunman. He is described as a Tongan man who was wearing a white shirt and beige cargo shorts.
A freshman student who witnessed the shooting described the suspect firing at the victims and walking casually toward Freeport Boulevard.
“I am walking out of class and I see this lunatic shooting two men, and I run the other direction because I feared him turning around and shooting me,” said the student who wants to remain anonymous.
As of 7:30 p.m., the lockdown ended and the all-clear was issued, according to college spokesperson Rick Brewer. Classes will be held as scheduled tomorrow. Campuses in West Sacramento and Davis were not part of the lockdown.
Several students tell CBS13 there was confusion after news of the shooting broke. They did not know where to go or what was happening.
Mayor Kevin Johnson tweeted a message to the victims Thursday night.
Police say this incident could be connected to shooting that happened earlier in the day. A man who matches the description of the Sacramento City College shooter also shot a man in the face on Cottonfield Way, off Gerber Road in Sacramento. The victim was leaving home for work when the gunman fired through the windshield of his vehicle. The victim is expected to survive.
