Getting Answers Road Tour: Dunnigan

DUNNIGAN (CBS13) - It's a small town in Yolo County that had big plans to grow. So what happened? That's what a few of our viewers have been asking.

CBS13's Tony Lopez went on a road tour by request.

The town in which A.W. Dunnigan built a large barn in the 1850's that would later become a railroad station, has come a long way. But one CBS13 viewer who calls this slice of Yolo County, about 35 miles north of Sacramento, home has some questions about where it's headed:

Lori Bragg wants to know: When will Dunnigan become more developed?

"The bigger picture for Dunnigan -- there is a specific plan that has been proposed and the developers are still working on the plan to make that work with respect to the county policies," said Yolo County Planning Director Taro Echiburu.

The plan includes retail, a number of small restaurants, and a motel. Is this still on the table?

"They've been talking to us about maybe resurfacing that particular project; however, we know that's up to the developers. We hear that they're very interested," said Echiburu.

We were interested in getting another, more specific question answered.

Lori also wants to know what's going to happen to an abandoned once-popular restaurant Bill and Kathy's

Cars once jammed into this parking lot, but now it looks like a ghost town. It's gone from making cornbread to housing cobwebs.

There is some good news.

"There are two main projects that seem to be on the near horizon," said Echiburu. "One is a Mexican restaurant at this spot -- the old Bill and Kathy's."

The other project will turn this old restaurant that struck out into what they hope will be a grand slam.

"And the second one is a Denny's on County road 8 at that interchange, next to pilot," said.

The plan may also include a fast-food joint nearby.

So even if you don't live in Dunnigan, the next time you're driving by, now you know there's something cooking in this sleepy little town.

"Our visitors can come off the freeway and enjoy some of the other facilities, so that would be our hope for the Dunnigan area," said.

You can catch our Getting Answers Road Tours every Friday at 10.
