Central California Woman Arrested After Child Falls Out Of Moving Car

VISALIA, Calif. (AP) - Police in Central California say they have arrested a woman on a felony child endangerment charge after she failed to put her 10-month-old son in a car seat and the boy fell out of the vehicle when a passenger door opened during a turn.

The Fresno Bee reports Sunday officers in Visalia arrested 26-year-old Ashley Cowell as she tried to leave the accident scene with her injured baby Thursday.

Sgt. Damon Maurice says the infant had injuries to the top of his head and face. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Maurice says detectives determined Cowell knowingly placed her son in the back seat without a car seat or proper safety device.

Child Welfare Services took custody of the injured boy and his two siblings, who were not involved in the accident.
