Sacramento City Council Voting On No-Cycling Zones For Sidewalks

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento's city council could vote Tuesday to ban bicycles from sidewalks.

Riding your bike on the sidewalk is legal, under the current law.

The Sacramento Bee reports a 69-year-old woman was struck by a cyclist last year and filed a $3.5 million lawsuit against the city, prompting the vote.

Under the proposed plan, there would be new areas designated by the city manager where bikes would be banned. These would be marked by signs.

Where there are no signs banning bicycles, cyclists would have to yield the right of way to pedestrians by slowing down or getting off their bikes and walking. They would also have to use an audible warning when passing a pedestrian from behind.

For those who break the rules, the first ticket could cost up to $25. A second violation within the same year would cost up to $100, and a third violation in the same year would cost up to $250.

The ban would not apply to police officers and other emergency personnel.
