Parents Ridicule, Teachers Defend School's Suggested Bedtime Chart

School is back in session, meaning it's time for kids to get back into a little more regimental sleep schedule. However, a Facebook post is going viral with thousands calling out a school's "helpful" chart as being completely unrealistic.

The chart, posted by in late August by Wilson Elementary in Wisconsin, features the suggested sleeping times for children based on age and what time they need to wake up. For example: if a 6-year-old needed to wake up at 6:45 a.m., they would need to go to sleep at 7:30 p.m. the night before according to the chart.

If a 7:30 p.m. bedtime sounds pretty early to you, then you're not alone. The post has been shared more than 387,000 times by people both lampooning and defending it.

"Tell that to a mother who [doesn't] get home until 6:15 most nights and still has to prepare dinner, check homework and get baths," wrote commenter Crystal Roberts.

Many, including more than a few teachers, have come to the chart's defense.

"As a retired teacher I would like to say a whole of parents have no idea how their kids are in school. It was pretty darn discouraging to be conducting class with students who were too tired to hold their heads up. And don't give me this "bored" routine," wrote commenter Kathleen Stutterheim.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that young children need about 11-13 hours of sleep a night, while elementary school-aged kids need about 9-11 hours - all numbers within the chart's parameters.
