Is 'Star Wars' Coming To Netflix?

By Kyle Buis

UPDATE: A representative from Netflix says there are no current plans to stream the movies at this time.

However, the company does have an exclusive deal it struck with Disney in 2012 that goes into place in 2016. That deal includes LucasFilm, so it may be a long, cold winter before the force comes to Netflix.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The Force could be with Netflix, soon.

Several listings on the streaming service's site point to the possible inclusion of both trilogies.

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

episode 1

Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones

episode 2

Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

epsiode 3

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

episode 5

Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

episode 6

The only title missing from the first six movies is "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope." The rights to the movie have been in contention since Disney struck a deal to bring the Star Wars series into its fold. The recent digital release of the first "six Star Wars" movies on Vudu included the option for the Disney Movies Everywhere service, except for "A New Hope."

When the movies would be offered on the streaming service is up in the air. The seventh installment, "Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is slated for a Dec. 18 release. It's likely a release could come before that date as part of the movie's publicity push.
