Move Over Downtown Plaza—It's DoCo Time In Downtown Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A spot in Downtown Sacramento has a new name.

Move over Downtown Plaza and make way for the Downtown Commons, with its branded shortened name—DoCo.

Sacramento Kings staff and JMA Ventures announced the new name for the area around the Golden 1 Center, the team's new arena slated to open in October of 2016.

Punch Bowl Social, Pour Society and Sauced BBQ And Spirits were announced as the first three tenants for the space.

"The announcement today of the first three tenants I think is an indication of, not only the level of quality, but also the interest," said Michael Ault with the Downtown Partnership.

Whether you like the name or not, he says the announcement means the complex will have life whether or not there's an event at the arena.

"The philosophy going into this has been whether or not there's an event at the arena, we've got to be creating a district which is going to be attractive and a destination 365 days," he said.

Macy's says it plans to stay put. As for other businesses in the area, gallery owner Barry Smith says he's good with branding the area, but not sure about the name.

"Downtown Commons—I'm not sure that name inspires me necessarily," he said. "I don't know, but I like the idea of other than arena."
