WATCH: Apple CEO Tim Cook Says He 'Felt A Tremendous Responsibility' To Reveal He's Gay

NEW YORK (CBS Sacramento) -- Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" why he decided to come out as gay to the public last year.

Cook told Colbert that he "felt a tremendous responsibility to do it."

"It became so clear to me that kids are getting bullied in school, kids were getting basically discriminated against, kids were even being disclaimed by their own parents, and that I needed to do something," he said.

Cook continued, "And that where I valued my privacy significantly, I felt I was valuing it too far above what I could do for other people, and so I wanted to tell everyone my truth."

Cook, who became the first openly gay Fortune 500 company CEO, said it wasn't a revelation to many within Apple.

"It was like discovering something on your iPhone, it was always done, but you didn't quite know it," Cook joked to Colbert.

During a recent event in San Francisco, Cook unveiled Apple's new Internet TV system and two new iPhone models.
