Oregon College Shooting Revives Worries Following Sacramento City College Shooting
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) —Thursday's shooting at an Oregon college revived worries from a shooting at Sacramento City College less than a month ago.
Many students told CBS13 that hearing about the shooting that left at least 10 dead in Oregon made them realize just how bad the situation could have been in Sacramento.
One person was killed in a shooting at Sacramento City College on Sept. 3.
While investigators believe the incident was isolated, school leaders say they are trying to learn from any mistakes made that day.
Many students felt the school's response was slow in the minute after shots rang out. They said they text alert to shelter in place didn't come until 40 minutes after the shooting. Had the incident not been isolated, it could have been much worse.
Security expert Hector Alvarez says administrators are concerned about causing a panic or issuing vague messages that don't help those who need information as the incident unfolds.
"We are seeing delays, we are seeing a reluctance, and one of the most important things is getting information out in quick and timely manner so people can make their own decisions, and people can get out of harm's way," he said.
Los Rios Community College District says it has an outside agency to propose recommendations to increase the school's response to similar incidents.
