Dreams Of Elk Grove Outlet Mall Dashed By Recession Could Be Revived Next Year
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — The Elk Grove Outlet Mall could be resurrected once again after it was waylaid by the recession.
What was supposed to be a thriving outlet mall is now nothing more than a metal shell filled with seven years of empty economic dreams and dashed hopes.
"It's been a few years but its back on track," said Mayor Gary Davis.
Elk Grove city officials say the plan is back on track with the promise of an $11 million, 14-screen movie theater with the stores.
"The fact that the movie theater has submitted plans to move forward it's exciting it shows that it's a real project it's on its way," he said.
During the economic downturn, the previous property owners abandoned the property. New owners, the Howard Hughes Corporation, has an open-air design planned with multiple green spaces, outdoor dining and a children's play areas.
Residents are looking for more shopping options aside from Arden Fair mall in Sacramento and the Roseville Galleria.
Davis anticipates the new outlet mall will open by October of 2016.
