Spencer Stone Awake And Alert As Search Continues For Suspects In Stabbing

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento's Hometown Hero is awake, alert and healing, even managing to get out of his bed after a stabbing on Thursday.

Before Spencer Stone was stabbed on a Midtown street corner, he was hailed as a hero at a Sacramento bar.

He was a showstopper at Badlands, stepping on stage and making the crowd go wild.

"Everybody went crazy and we were excited he was here," said Badlands promoter Ron Sharffer.

He was recognized by a deejay who is a military veteran.

"People screamed and cheered, they came up to him afterwards," he said.

He says the 23-year-old stone came in with a female friend and a few others. They had drinks at the Midtown bar, but didn't appear drunk. There were no arguments and they left.

"Obviously something good and celebratory turned into something unfortunate," he said.

Police say Stone's group met a second group outside in the parking lot. They had words, and Stone was stabbed in the late-night fight. It appears it escalated when Stone stepped in to defend a woman who had been punched. Police now say she wasn't with his group at the bar.

Two suspects and likely the woman who was punched, got into a waiting Toyota Camry after the fracas. Police are still looking for them.

"Someone's gonna talk," said Sacramento police spokesman Doug Morse. "Someone's going to say something."

Investigators hope the immense international interest in the case will motivate someone else to talk.

We're hopeful, but we also realize it's going to take the community's help," he said. "It's going to take that one piece of information that comes from a witness tip; a friend of a friend that heard something."

Midtown businesses and bars, including Badlands, are teaming up to offer a reward for information leading to arrest. It's up to $3,500.
