SEC Weekly Report: Steve Spurrier Says Good-Bye, For Now

It's the end of an era in the SEC. Steve Spurrier resigned from his position as head coach at South Carolina, seemingly bringing an end to his college football coaching career. Although Spurrier made a point to say he was not retiring, it seems as though he has surely coached his final game of his career. Fortunately, there will be no way of keeping Spurrier out of college football in one manner or another.

This weekend, Spurrier will join the ESPN College GameDay team in Ann Arbor before Michigan's home game against Michigan State. Some fans are already petitioning to have Spurrier added to the GameDay lineup for years to come, perhaps succeeding Lee Corso when the time comes. Spurrier traveling around the country on Saturdays to be a part of the GameDay team may not be the most ideal retirement plan for Spurrier, but he will surely pop his head in from time to time to share his opinions and thoughts on the game. Here's hoping it remains that way for a long time.

Spurrier will likely be much more inclined to stay in the warmer weather and getting in a full 18 holes before the first games of the afternoon hit halftime. Even if a permanent spot on GameDay is not in the cards, Spurrier will find a way to get a microphone in front of him to talk college football. We can all hope, at least.

Florida QB Will Grier Suspended

Had it not been for Spurrier's resignation, the suspension of Florida quarterback Will Grier would have been the lead story in the SEC this week. Grier was suspended for a full calendar year after failing an NCAA-administered drug test after taking an over-the-counter supplement not allowed by the NCAA. Grier will miss the remainder of the 2015 season and the first six games of the 2016 season.

Grier's suspension seems to have been handled in a mature and responsible way at Florida, starting with head coach Jim McElwain. But the focus now shifts to what this means for Florida's season. The Gators have started the year without taking a loss and now head to LSU for a stiff road test. Treon Harris will take over as Florida's quarterback. While he has experience and has shown some glimpses of potential, it is still a tall order for Florida's backup to keep the good vibes going, especially this weekend at LSU.

SEC Game Of The Week: No. 9 Texas A&M (5-0, 2-0 SEC) vs. No. 10 Alabama (5-1, 2-1 SEC)

Texas A&M has been playing with one of the most improved defense sin the SEC, and Kevin Sumlin always has an offense ready to strike. The Aggies were embarrassed last year by Alabama, but now Texas A&M gets Alabama on their field in the renovated Kyle Field. Texas A&M has the tools to give Alabama a good run this week, but Alabama cannot afford to lose a second game in the SEC West.

SEC Upset Alert of the Week: No. 13 Ole Miss (5-1, 2-1 SEC) at Memphis (5-0, 2-0 AAC)

The Rebels hit the road for a game at Memphis, and Ole Miss should not take this one lightly. Justin Fuente has built Memphis into a true Group of Five contender with a high-flying offense that can pose a threat to any team on the schedule. Ole Miss has a distinct advantage in depth and skill, but these Memphis Tigers are not to be overlooked. Playing at home, Memphis could score a huge win to boost their New Years Six argument as the season continues.

SEC Picks

Ole Miss 43, Memphis 36
Mississippi State 31, Louisiana Tech 20
Texas A&M 27, Alabama 24
South Carolina 23, Vanderbilt 13
LSU 24, Florida 10
Georgia 33, Missouri 17
