College Football Weekly Q&A: Steve Spurrier Retiring

So the Steve the "Ol Ball Coach" Spurrier announced his retirement this week, shocking the greater sports world (and by greater sports world we mean, people who are a. fans of sports and b. people who are fans of sun shade but can't fully commit to a baseball hat). While this may have been a surprise to most, the news didn't shock college football expert and local broadcaster Cody Stark at all. He has ALWAYS figured Spurrier took the South Carolina gig because of the school proximity to numerous golf courses.

Q: Cody, what three things will you miss most about Spurrier?

A: #1 - His love of any quarterback that isn't HIS starting quarterback

No matter how great his starting quarterback is playing, he was only one "three and out" away from being pulled for his back up, eventually Steve would get frustrated with the backup and have the guy in row seven suit up. Back in 2011, I saw Spurrier get so infuriated with the erratic play of Stephen Garcia, that I swear I saw him eyeing some shoulder pads on the sidelines. Considering he won the Heisman with the Florida Gators in 1966-it might not have been a bad idea.

# 2 - He was Harbaughing before Harbaugh, Harbaughed

Pre-Jim Harbaugh's reign of being the most entertaining watch on the sidelines…there was my man Steve Spurrier,  turning shade of red that is usually reserved for over ripe roma tomatoes. He would throw his headset, his assistants head set, sets on random people's heads, any headsets within a four mile radius…and this was before kickoff! The abuse his visors got when he slammed them down could register a 2.7 on the Richter scale.

#3 - His sense of humor

Man, no one and I mean NO ONE was better at poking the bears that were the other coaches in the SEC…always with a wry, southern smirk. It was part stand up part pre-twitter, twitter troll. I'm a HUGE Auburn fan (My Bama loving Grandmother didn't speak to me for three years because I went to Auburn…I call those, "The Happy Years") and I will never forget the time he said about a fire at the Auburn library that destroyed 20 books: "The real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet." Hilarious!

Goodbye ball coach, the SEC is already a lil' less fun with you gone.
