CHP: 5 Killed, 2 Injured In Fiery Crash East Of Groveland

TUOLUMNE COUNTY (CBS13) – Authorities confirm that five people have died following a fiery crash east of Groveland.

The scene was on Highway 120, near Smith Station Road. Nick Norton from California Highway Patrol's Sonora Division says two cars collided head-on around 6:30 p.m. Saturday after one of the cars crossed over the center median.

A fire started as a result of the crash.

Alcohol has not been rules out as a cause.

Five people were killed in the crash, Norton confirms. Two other people suffering from serious injuries have been taken to a Modesto hospital.

One of the cars, a 2012 Mercedes, is registered out of San Jose, while the other, a 2012 Nissan, is registered out of Merced. It is unclear which car crossed the median, Norton said.

Highway 120 was closed in the area for hours while CHP continues to investigate. Traffic to Groveland is being diverted through Ferretti Road.
