Police: Elk Grove Man Arrested In Spencer Stone Stabbing Case

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento Police say an Elk Grove man has been arrested in the Spencer Stone stabbing case.

At a press conference early Wednesday afternoon, police announced that 28-year-old James Tran was the man arrested. Tran was arrested after his car was stopped by police Wednesday morning. He was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives believe it was Tran who circled behind Stone and stabbed him in the Oct. 8 incident. Tran is not believed to be the man seen hitting a woman, the incident the sparked the altercation.

Police say Tran has a criminal history and didn't know Stone.

Stone was one of three Sacramento natives who helped stop a suspected terror attack on a French train. An active serviceman in the U.S. Air Force, Stone was promoted from airman first class to staff sergeant last week.

Tran is now facing a charge of attempted homicide.

Detectives note that they had not been watching Tran, he was only recently identified as a suspect.
