Couple Who Lost Home To Butte Fire Now Contending With Cold, Wet Conditions

MOUNTAIN RANCH (CBS13) — The wet and colder temperatures are creating concern for people living in the Butte Fire burn scar where many are still living in tents and trailers with no heat.

It's a one-two punch for people who live in this burn zone—already burnt out of their homes, now this storm had them bracing for what could come next.

As the storm rolls through, a tarp is a makeshift porch for their temporary shelter in an RV.

"People are going to get seriously wet in some places where they don't have a home yet," said David Thomas.

He and Joyce Schroetlin are two of the Mountain Ranch homeowners whose homes were destroyed in the Butte Fire. All that remains of it now are the pictures.

The couple is living back on their property without the safety their home once provided. In its place, a donated RV for which they are grateful.

But the Butte Fire burn scar is now creating new dangers for them—flooding and mudslides.

"Last night it was hard for me to sleep because I was worried every little noise I heard was the hillside doing a mudslide or a landslide down the hill into us," she said.

David and Joyce say they have no timetable for how long they'll be living on their property in a trailer, but they are eager to begin rebuilding their home.
