Increased Security Presence Greets Thanksgiving Travelers

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – More people are expected to leave home for this Thanksgiving holiday week than in the past eight years.

But this year, Thanksgiving is coming on the heels of the attacks in Paris, begging the question: will the terror threat impact holiday travel?

As the joy of the holiday season begins, Rose Oates went through security at Sacramento International Airport unwavering.

"I'm really excited to see some family this thanksgiving," Oates said. "I'm not worried."

About 46 million will travel in the U.S. this Thanksgiving holiday week – and they will see extra officers, patrol dogs and guns at virtually every airport, train station and tourist destination in the country.

Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson says his agency is ready for anything.

"I always hesitate to rank threats. But the potential copycat, the lone wolf actor, is one that we're continually focused on. That threat has been there pre-Paris," Johnson told CBS News. "The point is we're not taking our eye off the ball in any respect."

Lines at the airports will be longer and slower. TSA says it will handle 25 million passengers this week with enhanced screenings.

"Flying nowadays isn't as joyful or as relaxing as it used to be," said traveler Arlene Sykes.

Family vacation destinations like Disney World have not announced additional security measures, and the Department of Homeland Security says there are no credible threats anywhere in the U.S. at this time.
